I'm wondering if maybe whoever setup the rear end didn't setup the rotating torque correctly on the pinion. Too much or too little rotating torque and it will eat up pinion bearings with a quickness. Or the pinion could have been left way too loose and as soon as the pinion is loose, the gears offset and don't mesh correctly with the ring gear. When that happens, ring and pinion gears break.

That sucks. Better to happen at home before you unloaded it at the track. Congrats on the 11sec pass.

thanks to all that said congrats i finally am getting it where it needs to be already have a few more people that dont like me lol after my 11.91 we changed a few things ran worse then boost hose popped off didnt notice it till on way home thats why it was running bad. i leaned it out really bad dont know if i hurt it yet or not dont think so but there is a chance

ok we looked at car i melted a plug and we changed them and that was the problem she is back to running like a raped ape on crack i will be back in 11's next race hope mid 11's but we will see i got really lucky the electrode was half melted off oops i guess i need to watch things a lil closer but what a relief ;D

Yeah it was. Her car is fixed. She got lucky. If it was my car it would have melted a few pistons. boost gauge line slid out, so the fpr and water injection switch never saw boost.
My car... the SHEP transfer case is toast, not the rear end. I'm wondering if its possible to do a detroit e-locker so I can essentially run an open rear end. This would unload a ton of strain on the whole driveline and make the front axles work some.
Or- find a stronger than OEM gearset to go on the shep output shaft. Or- narrower rear tires?
Its also possible the shootout 2008 may have started the damage. I was driving it down the track with chunks of ring gear binding up.
All I got out of it so far was one soft slip of the clutch launch that was really good. 5psi boost and 2step at 5k. Heck last year I was dumping it at 6700 and 20psi, and the car weighed 400 pounds more.

Damn. It's a long shot, but there's not some type of warranty on that t-case is there? Something tells me that a warranty was probably never available for them though.
Yoy could just swap that locker out for a helical gear limited slip. It wouldn't be nearly as aggressive as that locker that you have.

Do you know of any for 35 spline axles? I was going to run the tru-trac but they dont fit these axles. I agree the locker is part of the problem.
I sent shep a message. Hopefully I will get some discounted FAST turnaround.
The OEM gears are fusion welded to his upgraded output shaft. Should be able to turn whats left of the gear off and replace it with another gearset I have here.

Damn man. I guess its better than your new rear end taking a shit.
Paul and I were just discussing this a while back. Its pretty crazy when your high performance upgraded t-case becomes the weak link.
Is your rear end setup as a full locker right now?
Also, I'd ask Shep to see if maybe he would shed some light on his previous setup. He ran his upgraded is T-case didn't he?

yeah, its a full locker. I wanted the tru-trac but they don't offer it for 35 spline axle.
I'm still on stock front axles. Crazy. I'm wondering how bad an open diff would be in the rear. I didn't notice much if any diff going from open to limited slip in the front.

I'm not really sure on what's all available for 9" rear ends. Maybe Paul could help you out. There has to be some kind of helical, clutch style, or spool available but idk for sure.
If I were you I don't think I'd venture trying an open rear end. If you end up spinning one rear tire out of the hole it may not end up too well, but then again it may help save the t-case and front axles. i Is there any other options for a T-case? Maybe PPG or PAG or Even TRE could make some sort of stronger gearset?

Just a thought but it could make since. Are you positive that your new rear end gear ratio and final drive are the same as stock?

rear end ratio is 3.545. The 9" has a 3.55. It didn't have any problems at 80mph.
I talked to troxell, he says the locker shouldn't be making much of a difference vs the viscous lsd. Might be able to change the 4 link so it unloads some from the rear of the car by changing the pinion angle.
More than likely, the t-case stress fractured at shootout.

It prob stressed crack last year when you blew your diff and you decided to stay pinned... lol Then it bounded and finally broke... its was broke before you even launched it.... I say we still save the shaft and turn down that gear in a lathe and have it spined. Then have somone make us gears so you can change the gears if they break and not a 2500 shaft...
