It was the Friday morning of the Shootout, beautiful day, windows down, stereo crankin, turbo spoolin, cruizin with good friends... ...Couldn't ask for anything better.
Then the worst happened. Runnin on 10psi low boost, decided would be fun to flip the switch and I'm at 25psi, should be fine, has a solid tune for 25......everything was fine for about 3 seconds, then I hear that horrible whooshing sound like an IC pipe popping off, then no more boost ..... I think no big deal, next rest area I'll just pull it over, repop on the IC pipe and everything will be grand..... Pull over, pipes are still all on ..... pull off my turbo intake pipe and I witness a turbo that is hard to turn over by hand and leaking oil.....DAMN!!! No smoking, no whining noise, nothing.... just up and gives up on me..... I think it might have been seeing too much pressure, need to get in there and port the relief valve.... sometimes over 100psi at WOT
So I lag behind.....disconnect my filter and intake.....shove the filter right on the MAF, adjust Link slightly, and proceed to have a great time....although N/T.... at BW's and Bushur's on Saturday. Too bad no actual Shootout, but was worth the trip anyways.
So I got the car home and on the lift and contemplating what's next. After much deliberation...it is time to step up..... Since the 9:1 rebuild, new headwork, etc..... Time for a Bigger turbo.......
Garrett .63Turbine / .70Compressor T-3 ;D
Not terribly large, but should be a nice upgrade to what I had. I'll probably keep my SS manifold, except I wanna TIG on a external wastegate. It's been holding up perfectly since bracing it good. I'm guessing just a 38mm gate or something. Not a real big project, but I'm getting excited.
Thinking if time allows I might throw in some 272's like Matt's got, would be a nice compliment to the turbo I think......
I'll keep ya'll posted
