So, after purchasing absinthminded's pretty-clean ride, and my impression of Murphy's Law left it broke the same day; after pulling the cam angle sensor and removing the spark plugs, i found the cas to be good. after reinstalling everything, it fired right up. WTF? Then after 3 days of sitting, a quick ride left me fogging for mosquitoes early( head gasket, #2 cyl.) The new project list is as follows: find a new head gasket and gates racing kevlar impregnated t-belt, install said items, replace the rnr exhaust with the apexi n1 from the gray ghost, and hit martin to get a baseline to compare the new times vs. the new parts. next after that is installing an fmic, bigger injectors and some engine management. then interior i.e. stereo, seats, etc. any other thoughts (other than brake upgrades), please post.

First after you repair the head gasket, I'd install that Turbo XS MBC that I sold you with the car. I don't see the need to change the T-belt to a Kevlar impregnated belt. If you insist on doing a new belt, I recommend that you install all new timing components. I'd also recommend removing the rest of the emissions, installing a balance shaft eliminator kit, and a block off plate for the EGR valve. IMO I would stick with the RnR stainless exhaust that is on there. I feel that is a superior product but thats only my opinion.

i'd recommend a new timing belt tensioner at a minimum. the fancy belts arent really all that necessary in my opinion. a good oem mitsu belt always does the trick and is easier on the wallet too. beyond getting it back to life, throw some injectors in and something to tune it and crank her up! then make it pretty again and be sure to make out every once and a while for change!

first off, the rnr is no different from the apexi other than 2 simple facts: slip-fit(rnr) vs bolt-on(apexi) and stainless(rnr) vs titanium particle coated(apexi). oh yeah, and I was experiencing one HELLUVA harsh decel noise and vibration with the rnr that I never got from the apexi! so, as far as superiority, it's more like personal preference. as for the tensioner, I dunno when exactly Darrell replaced the t-belt etc, but I do know he said he used a new tensioner. gotta imagine the current one will work just fine. since I've never done a t-belt on a 2.0l, I will be researching to make sure every precaution is taken and every step is followed to a T.

All the timing belt components were brand new. New pulleys, tensioner and new OEM T-belt. I was told when I changed it, "that I didn't need to replace all those items." I agree, If the job is worth doing, its worth doing right. You should be just fine saving the extra $ and reusing the setup that is on there. The T-belt job and HG was replaced at about 140k. I agree with Brent, larger injectors and something to tune with are in order to really get the full potential out of that turbo. +1 on the www.vfaq. There is full color step by step instructions on how to do this. Take it easy homes.

yeah, kinda think I just wanna make it work and be slightly less worrysome; dunno pros v cons as far as longevity and failure rate of a stock t-belt against a kevlar. One would almost assume a kevlar would be slightly less prone to breakage, stretching, etc. Not sayin there aren't more things left to worry about, just sayin something less to worry about would be helpful.

They have the same services life of 60k. They are just less pron to stretching at higher rpms which can cause various issues including belt skipping.

Got an ultrasound at 9 am, then an interview at 2pm. hopefully the kid ain't shy and the ultrasound goes quick enough for me to book out to Lane and be back in town by 145.

well, the ultrasound went well. gonna be a baby boy near the end of august. righteous. interview went well. and then... started tearing into the car after getting a new hg and sp plugs(biggups Paul, thx again.) got to removing the water pump pulley and found that someone didn't put the 10mm bolt back into the hole just above the water pump, and the pulley has been eating through the t-belt cover! sweet.
there's so much oil going down the front of the engine from behind the cam gears, that I don't have to worry about anything under the cover or beneath the engine on that side rusting! ah well. probably looks better than it will 5000 miles after I'm done monkeying around with this.
so, only one mani to turbo bolt broke. gonna replace all four while we're in there. and now I just need to undo the oil feed (pass side of head) and the coolant filler( same side of head) and pull the intake, head, and exhaust mani in one shot. finally get some more use outta my cherry-picker. clean her up, slap on the new head gasket, and reverse the 3+ hours spent fukin around in the cold weather with hand tools. yee-haw.
Oh yeah, almost forgot the coup d'etat. The hole on the end of the axle where a cotter pin usually resides, currently has what looks to me like a high quality carpentry nail like one would use to nail down a deck board. I hope this is as amusing to you as it was to me. game on
