Ok so I filled up my car last week with Shell 93 like I always do, but I've noticed that I am getting awwwfuulllll gas mileage. Usually I'll go 100-105 miles on my first quarter tank, but right now I'm a bit below half of a tank and only at 96 miles... so wtf mate?
I don't know if this is a usual thing in the winter time or what. This is the first time I've ever had a car in the winter, but it really hasn't been that cold or that snowy up here and I don't know what could be going on.
I didn't know if anyone else has had a problem or what so I figured I'd should out to all of you and get your input. I'm gonna hook up my datalogger and check my inj. duty cycle, and check to see if my filter isn't clogged or anything, but as for now the car runs the same as it always has.

No nothing that I can see from under the hood. Everything is clamped up nice and tight.

Let us know if your O2 sensor is still alive, Dan. Also, what are you tuning with?
It's strange that you experienced a change in your average mileage. Most untuned (or even factory tuned) DSMs won't be very impressive in the gas mileage department, but it shouldn't fluctuate much either.

How long is your usual drive? This is the first winter I've driven the talon in the winter living this close to work. I drive about 2 miles to work and if I don't do any highway driving I think i get 15-17 mpg cuz the car never has a chance to warm up.

Right now I have a Stage 3 chip from DSMchips.
My usual drive is a mile or two, to and from school and just around town. I usually get 18ish around town And a bit over 25 on the freeway. But I filled up last week and now I'm under a half tank.
Tomorrow I'm going to check for leaks and also check to make sure that the locking nut on the top of my AFPR didn't come loose maybe allowing that to change. Not sure how much of a difference it would make but I'm going to try to eliminate all possibilites.

Do you reset your trip odometer every time you get gas? fill up and see exactly what your mpg is.
The one time I had a fuel leak it was very evident and I got like 100 miles to the tank.

Yeah I reset my trip everytime and write my mileage down, just a habbit. That's how I realized it was so bad.
Are there any places I should look inparticular for a gas leak?

Park in a dry spot, let the car run for a few minutes then follow from tank to rail. There's a rubber hose from tank to metal line (that's what went bad on mine). The metal lines could have rotted out, check fittings at fuel filter then at rail. Repeat for return line.
Also a sticky injector could cause excess fuel to go in and might show up as a large negative fuel trim across the map.

I would have to agree with the O2 sensor possibly being bad. Also make sure that your speedo is reading correctly. If the speedo is reading low, your odometer will be low as well. I had to change out my speedo sensor not that long ago for that very reason.
Also if you are AWD, it might not show the leak even though the pump outlet is leaking. Need to check under the cover in the trunk.

I had some ton of little pin hole rust outs in the pipe that runs from the gas door to the tank. It would spill out a bit when filling, and when ever I made a hard right turn. Just a thought. Also, I think there is a gasket between that pipe and the tank that would allow it to come out on a hard turn, but not sure

Ok well I went and did some looking around today.
AFPR checked out no problems and none of the lines under the hood are leaking.
Not sure about my 02 sensor at the moment, or my injectors. I'm charging my Palm right now so I'll be able to check my injectors later tonight.
As for parking in a dry spot, probably not gonna happen haha. Only way would to have someone with a garage up here and all my friends' places are packed with crap.
As far as I know my speedo is a little off until I hit about 80 and then it corrects itself to 90 (I know the 90mph speed is correct because when I ran at the track I would trap 100mph which matched my speedo). So I don't think it's anything bad enough to throw my trip that bad.
I'll see what my datalogger says tonight and let you guys know.
Also, would I notice the smell of fuel in the cabin if I had a leak around the seams for the pump?

Might not be your issue, but I know that when I use to only drive less then a mile, my mileage was worse then my current drive of 12 miles to work. I was thinking its because my truck never got out of its "cold" enrichment mode. This is on my 96 Tahoe with the 350. I get better average mileage now that I have a drive long enough for the motor to get up to temp.
Maybe this is why you are seeing the drop in mileage, but there could still be a problem as you guys are talking about. Get an actual mileage number so you know how serious the potential problem is.
Air filters, O2 Sensors, coolant temp sensors, and leaks are common issues I hear about when mileage is talked about.

Also, would I notice the smell of fuel in the cabin if I had a leak around the seams for the pump? I would doubt it unless you leave the seats down, pull the carpet up and take off the access plate. Even if you can't park in a dry spot let the car idle and watch underneath it for 5 minutes. If you've got an AFPR turn it up for testing. 60 psi will show more leaks than 37.
