So I've been checking out pistols lately and I think it would be a pretty fun hobby to get into. I've been reading around and trying to see what gun would work well for me. I'm sort of leaning towards a Glock 19 because 9mm seem to be the cheapest as far as ammunition goes and I like that it's a slightly compact version for if I ever get my CCW.
I know there are a bunch of you guys on here that are pretty big into guns so I thought I would ask you what you guys shoot and what you like? I'm mostly just looking for something that I could possibly carry as a CCW if I'd like to in the future and to take to the range on weekends to have fun with.

+1 for me too. Connie and I have been talking about each getting a pistol to range shoot, and be a CC for me. Cheap on ammo is a must too, I'd be shooting it frequently. Lets here some opinions, etc.. PICS?

Heres my personal opinion.. I LOVE the Springfield Armory XD. And heres why.. Its the most comfortable pistol I have used, Its very reliable, they are very easy to operate and maintain and there are many different variations of it. 9mm, .40, .45 and 3", 4", and 5".. as well as the newer XD-M line which is even better then the original. I have shot many different types of guns, and the XD is what I picked as my first New pistol. I have shot glock, beretta, ruger, S&W, and countless others... but for me, I would buy another XD. I have to note that I am not a fan of glock. I actually shoot very well with one, but I just dont like there sights or how it feels in my hand. I currently own the XD .40 in the 3" Sub-compact verson, all black. It came with the standard 9 round mag and an extended 12 round mag. Its great to shoot at the range, and I think its a little hefty to carry for your CPL, but I think its manageable. Heres a generic picture of one with the 9 round mag and an after market Pearce grip extension.. A must have if your hands are larger. This is pretty much exactly what mine looks like. I also changed out my sights with some TruGLo night sights, but thats not necessary. www.practicalshootingacademy.com/cms/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/Springfield-XD-sub-compact-with-Pearce-grip-extension.jpgThe fiber optic night sights I had installed.. www.cgwgun.com/TruGlo-TFO-Night-Sights__TRU-TFO.aspx

Almost forgot.. Once you get it narrowed down to some brands you like or types you like.. Go shoot them all side by side.
TJ was looking for a pistol and so we went to Silver Bullet firearms in Grand Rapids, and you can rent guns for like 10 bucks a gun. Then you just need ammo and you can shoot them all and compare which you like best. So if your looking at 9mm, just rent 4-5 different models and you will quickly learn which you like better.

i've shot thousands of rounds through a glock 19. to me, its a comfortable gun to shoot and not overly heavy or big for cc. i'll most likely be picking up a glock 23 pretty soon as my cpl should be here in the mail in the next week or two. its a .40 but has the same size frame as the 19. like he said, go try a bunch and see what fits your hand good and is going to be a decent size for carry.

I rented mostly 40 cal pistols when I was looking. To me, I was most comfortable and most accurate with the XDM-40. The Glock was second to me with the M&P in a far last place (I really didn't like one thing about that gun). For the price and the importance of this investment, renting a few guns and buying some ammo at silverbullet is money well spent.

As others have already said, go to a local range and rent a few different makes of firearms. What is comfortable to one person may not be to the next. After you have found which gun you can safely and accurately control, the next step is finding the correct holster. I myself carry a Glock 27 in a Crossbreed Supertuck at my 5 o' clock. It's the most comfortable set up I have used to date and makes carrying much more enjoyable. The pros of a glock are, you can upgrade and find parts pretty cheap allowing you to purchase a .40 cal barrel for your g19 making it both a 9mm when you want to go to the range and a .40 when you carry for sd. Glocks also use the least amount of moving parts then any other pistol making the chance of failure much less. Also, it takes about 5 seconds for me to field strip my slide. But, if the glock doesn't fit well in your hand or if you don't shoot it well, then thats all out the window. Welcome to the wonderful world of shooting sports, I'm sure you will be addicted soon ;D. Keep us posted with the decision you make, maybe a shooting meet sometime this summer??

i own a model 26 (sub-compact glock 9mm) and a 23 (.40 daily cc) prefer the 23 but the 26 is ok as long as i have mag extensions on the 10 rd mag or a larger capacity mag.
