So I'm in dire need of a new DD, and I've been doing research and with my budget (around 7-10k) I've really been looking at the Audi B5 S4. Anyone have any opinions or experience with these cars?

maintenance is key. -wheel bearings and balljoints will get you repeatedly. -for an s4 things like the turbos can be common to give out with more miles especially when modded. you have to pull the engine to get to them. -the pixels in the displays for the cluster and radio and hvac are known to go dead as well.
if i were you i would shy away from a cheap s4 and focus more on a a4 of that generation if you like them and it is going to be a dd. just my .02

Those are most of the issues I've read about too, and it's been a chore to find one of these things as well (even harder to find one that some backyard mechanic, like most of us haha, has gotten a hold of).
Would you recommend the 1.8T or the 3.0?

overall, the 1.8t. still kind of maintenance intensive but easy to work on, and responds ok to mods while still getting respectable mpg.

Well I guess this is a better, more open question. I'm looking for an AWD, preferably turbo car for a DD. I don't plan on modding it at all because as most of us know, modding your dd usually doesn't add to its reliability, so I'd like it to be quick enough to be fun but still get decent gas mileage.
I'd like to stay at or around 10K and so far all I really have on the list is an Audi A4 and the WRX. Anyone else have any ideas or input? (And not knocking our beloved DSMs, but I'm not going to try and make another one of them my reliable DD, I'll keep that for the weekend car).
