The only advice I can offer is that if you are at all serious about the filler staying in place for more than a month or so is to make sure you have a clean surface underneath it, meaning no rust, paint, anything. When you sand down the filler, move at a 45 degree angle. For your first time you may find yourself re-adding filler more than you planned on.
I would also block down the van with something a little coarser than 800 before painting.
I know if I was going-to-town on my beater van, I'd at least paint it like the Mystery Machine, but have fun!

Yeah, try some 150 grit to get the majority removed, then continue with like a 600 grit. This is how I'm currently doing my Talon.
Also, for the rattle-can job, here's a tip: Fill a 5-galon bucket with very hot water, and submerse your rattle cans in it. It heats them up, raising their internal pressure, giving you a more full and accurate spray pattern.
Good luck!

150 grit? Isn't like like sanding it with a rock? I figured I would need something a little more coarse but I didn't know that coarse...

does you dad have a belt sander or orbital? if so get some disks and go to town. it'll cut the time you spend atleast in half.

Yeah, but you have to figure - that layer of paint and clear coat is thick as hell. I use the 150 grit pads on an air-powered orbital sander. Then go back over it with a finer grit (can't remember the number right now). Works well for me. I'll snap some pictures tonight hopefully after I get back from a trip to Fort Custer in Battle Creek.

Been to lazy to update this. Finished 2-3 weeks ago? Went through and sanded it down with 120grit, slapped more bondo on and started painting it...I did a sloppy job, mostly because it's just a beater anyways, and I didn't really know that much about the right way to do it... Forgot to go back over with 600 or 800 grit after I was done with 120 so you can kinda see the scuffs and everything. 1st coat 2nd Finished, After about 16 ;D cans of paint(3 coats) Just cuz its how I roll Now I think I have carpaltunnel from spraying . Anyways, I was pretty satisfied with the final product, now we'll see how long it will last...
