Who should i go with teamrip or sheptrans? i was looking at the teamrip with a welded center diff. Or should i get the sheptrans stage 2 or 3 with a welded center diff.?
And is a welded diff. even worth it or should i just get the 4 spider center diff?
This is going in a 1990 talon tsi

I'd go with TRE b/c they are local, very well know, build some of the best trans's in the industry. Also if you go up there in person Jon will more than likely cut you a bit of a deal as no shipping/ tax will be involdved.
Don't use a welded diff if its a street car.

Yeah Jon and HiFi will treat you good. Also yes a welded diff sucks but is pretty nice for launching. All in all I hate mine.

Send him an email telling him your a local and want to get your trans done through him. He usually doesn't like people just showing up. Other than that I would strongly recommend getting it done by him. He does excellent work and hooks up local people...especially if you pay cash instead of credit (he has to charge tax with a credit card).
My trans shifts perfect at high RPM and I was putting sick ass launches on it Friday night at the track and it performed flawlessly.

def. TRE not just because they're local, but because it's a better transmission. look at what both companies do the same, and then look at what they do different.

It's kinda hard to say one is better than the other unless you've used both.
I've had my Shep trans for over 2 years now, and have had zero issues. And it's not like he doesnt have a good track record for product, price, and customer service. What did get run... Eight flat on angle cut gears?
I would recommend either as a good purchase, but I dont know if I'd stretch to say one is better than the other.

I think TRE does better work, but Shep has better customer service and shipping for the masses. I think TRE is excellent for local people, or those who don't mind driving there.
Not to mention the 'budget build' TRE offers for $950 is a really good deal for what all you get and the work thats put into it. Jon took me around his shop after they got all the new goodies. I like how they took everything apart in front of me, cleaned it up, and showed me what could be re-used, what was bad and why, and how he machines all the gears together for a perfect fit.

Yeah, Shep did the same thing for me. He gave me the short tour. He showed me what failed and why. And he also let me climb in his trailor and poke around the race car. It was a fun experience.
I think both guys really know what they're doing. I'll probably go to TRE for my AWD rebuild (down the road) simply because they are closer.

when it comes down to it, the only real differences are distance, and that tre modifies other things to make it shift better, last longer, etc.

You know, its funny, I heard directly from the mouth of an ex-employee from TRE that they are the ones that supplies Shep with all his tranny upgrade parts....interesting isnt it? Support the local DSM vendors man, otherwise they might not be around for forever! T R E F T W

Hey Gold,
Chances are that it will take him a week or two. I highly doubt that he stocks the Quaife LSD's, so he'll probably have to order one in.
I put down 400 WHP on a stage 1 with a Quaife, and it was holding just fine. I wouldn't worry about the stage 2 unless there's something specific you're looking for. The stage 1 should hold up just fine for you.
