As a few of you already know, I picked up a new addition to my auto collection last week. I purchased a MINT black cherry 91 Talon TSI AWD manual trans w/ no sunroof!
The car was complete, clean, and lightly modded. The car ran when we purchased it, but not well. Within a few minutes of checking it over, we came to realize that there was a large amount of coolant mixed with the oil and believe the head gasket to be the culprit. The engine is a stock, but recently rebuilt 6-bolt. We were told it has a hair over 900 miles on the rebuild. We were also informed that the tranny shifted fine and there were no other issues with the car. It had been a daily driver up until the point of head gasket failure (which was only 2 days before we bought it). The previous owner also told us it had a fresh Centerforce dual friction clutch and a lightweight flywheel. We haven't confirmed this yet because we haven't pulled the engine or tranny yet.
Project 1410
I am transforming this beast into a track-only drag car. My main goal is to pull off a 10-sec quarter mile time on the 14b (hence the name "Project 1410"). It would be cool to eventually go after the 14b record though. My budget for the first season will be a mere $2000, so everything I do will be cheap and affordable, yet proper and correct. I might eventually (in a year or two) upgrade to a 16G compressor and maybe even spray. I feel my goal is feasible through extreme weight reduction.
Dale and I also purchased the website domain www.SublimeDSM.com. The site will be a general site for us to showcase everything we do related to DSMs. We'll have pictures, mod lists, and write-ups for our 2G's as well as my 1G. It will also be home to our 'documentary' from start to finish with the build of Project 1410. We are also going to have a Contribution/Thanks page to offer credit to all individuals who helped me in one way or another on this project. Whether it be labor assistance or parts hook-ups, we want to show appreciation to those involved. Help with the roll cage and paint job are already lined up, so those will be the first two names on that page. The site should be up next week sometime.
Here are some pics of how it looked when we brought it home:
