Dan, years ago I had a similar issue on my fresh stroker engine. It would know like crazy all day I didn't know why. Timing via DSMlink was in check, and I thought I had set base timing correctly too. Well I didn't Even though I set it with a timing light to what I thought was 5*, I had it set to 15*. I made a simple noob mistake and set the light to flash on the notch to the left of the 10* mark on the timing cover. It works backwards and in reality thats 15*. You have to set it to the mark to the RIGHT of the 10* mark on the plastic timing cover, that is the correct 5* BTDC.
Just please make sure you have this set correctly. For me the car ran fine, idled fine, and had fine running timing, but as soon I hit the gas I had full knock, as I was trying to run an extra 10* of timing advance.

Hmm... I'll have to check it more carefully next time. I'm not sure I know what you mean by the plastic timing cover. The marks I'm looking at are coming off of the tab from the block, which is cast iron. Once I get my intercooler and intake pipes back on I'll set it to the right of the 10* mark and see how that affects things. Thanks for the input... I hope I can get this worked out, I'd like to run my car on the 4th at Midnight Madness :/

That tab by the crank pulley is part of the timing cover

The tab on the block you think a cast iron is actually plastic and part of the lower timing cover.

Well that was a pain in the ass to get clean up but this is how it turned out. Apparently the guy before me who owned the car liked JB weld. Holds pressure so I guess it could be worse. Got the intake cleaned and pretty inside and out. Question... what the heck is this hole for? I capped it off. I figured it was letting in unmetered air, which could be adding to the lean mix. But it's looks a lot better than before. Inside is super clean of all my tubes and I'm pleased with the way it turned out. Now I'm off to switch up my timing.

Alright so the timing was changed. Before, it was between the red line. And now it's between the blue lines. I went out and did some logs and it actually pulls a lot better. I'm still getting knock, but the rpm range has moved up to sensing knock at 6k and up. A 2nd - 4th gear pull showed: 2nd gear - KNCK peak @ 21 RPM 6687 TIM 14* 3rd grear - KNCK peak @ 29 RPM 6375 TIM 14* 4th gear - KNCK peak @ 41 RPM 4968 TIM 1* As soon as I touched 4th gear I let off because it was an instant power loss and I knew it something was off. I wish I had a cable so I could dowload the logs onto my computer. Blah

Try setting it to 0* base (the white mark) and try one last time. See if it clears it.
Are your sure that your cam timing marks are correct and lining up?

Yeah I wonder if the belt timing is 1 tooth off and trying to cause too much timing advance.
I agree try setting to 0* and make another log. Whats your vacuum at idle?

Sorry! School started this week so I've been super busy. I'll change the timing and get my vacuum reading for you tomorrow and let you know.

Ok, so my boost gauge is reading 17psi of vacuum at idle.
I retarded the timing to the 0* mark on the timing cover and the knock is definately less severe. Only downside is I can feel a noticeable power drop.
2nd gear - KNCK peak @ 4 RPM 6968 TIM 22*
3rd grear - KNCK peak @ 23 RPM 6781 TIM 16*
The power drop almost wants me to just put the timing back to how it was or between 5* and 10* and take just don't take it into upper rpm around town, then put race gas in at the track and let her rip.

How much boost?
I'd bump the fuel pressure up to 45psi and see what happens.

Spikes at 20 real quick and drops back down to about 18. Awhile back I bumped up the fuel pressure to see if it had any effect and no dice. If I remember correctly I even tried 50psi and I still had issues. I reeeeaaaaalllllly want to get this figured out for tomorrow.
